Context

For my final major project, I chose the concept of lunar deities and it started off very broad. I had so many different ideas and thought of ways of trying to merge them together. I chose the theme of lunar deities because I have a huge interest in mythical and magical things and this is present in all the pieces I have made. My original concept for my lunar deities project has definitely changed I started off with the concept of combining Chang’e the Chinese moon goddess and Hecate the goddess of crossroads and the moon however this changed because there wasn’t anything to link and combine the two deities together and I felt as though if I was going to use these two goddesses i should look into all lunar deities and re-imagine/ create my own to fit into that genre however that isn't really what I wanted so I did more research into the goddesses and I realize that Chang’e story resonated more and I liked her story and wanted to use it as inspiration. From this project, I have learned that no idea is solid and you have to give yourself room to grow and explore all options and ideas that you come across.

Research

My research has influenced and supported my creative thinking because it has aided me to have a better understanding of my project and what I'm actually trying to achieve. By doing all this research for my project I’ve learned that I need to do extensive research to really be able to show my idea and how I got from two lunar deities to exploring Chang’e and using her as an influence for my designs I’ve learned that without proper research the message the final outcome is trying to present doesn't really work. I didn't have any specific artists or designs that I took inspiration from per se except for one painting of change however the artist is unknown. The painting was very important to my development because I wanted it to still have characteristics of the original painting of Chang’e

Development of Creative Practice

When developing my creative practices I did lots of experimentation with patterns and making my own pattern pieces as well as elements of surface designs, I did a few samples and this helped me develop my design ideas. Doing samples and exploring different media was really relevant to the development of my work because it showed me what surface designs would work and which ones wouldn't so it made choosing a final design a lot easier as I had already tested out certain elements so I knew what would work and what wouldn't. I will definitely take the skill of sampling with me as it showed me the potential of a design I made on a small scale it also allowed me to experiment and do a lot of trial and error till I got my desired outcome and feel like this will be a skill that is beneficial to future projects.

Problem Solving

With my final major projects, I’ve had a lot of failed attempts at things one because what I was making was totally new to me and two because pattern making/drafting isn't one of my strongest elements. My success was making the Hanfu skirt as it was relatively easy to make however I had to make an adaptation to the pattern as I used a heavier fabric however the outcome was really beautiful. One of my failures was the jacket pattern I tried to follow the pattern from a book however when it came to me making it, it went wrong so to try and fix my mistake I got some help from my tutor and I learned how to pattern draft on a mannequin which was a lot easier and less confusing. I feel like making mistakes is the best way to learn from when in the making process because it allows you to look back and see where I went wrong and how I can fix that.

Planning, Progress, and Production

I have learned that I'm not exactly the greatest at planning and managing my time however as the weeks have progressed I have become better. I now know that for the future when I do plan I need to set more realistic goals for myself and stop trying to over-exert myself as it only leaves me burnt out. However, I have been able to successfully finish my work to the heights standard possible but in the future, I will definitely allocate the right amount of time to my project. I have planned and structured my project well as I was able to break down what was needed to be done however my only problem was sticking to it and I think that is something that I will need to work on for my next project to be even more successful.

Evaluation and Reflection

I have always had a strong evaluation and reflection page for my work, however for this project I’ve learned the more you do the better because it allows others to see your process and how you break down different bits of your project. My reflection and evaluation have helped me develop my ideas because I'm able to see what was successful and what wasn't it also helps me understand what I like about an artist/designer's work and what I don’t which then triggers me to be inspired and add my own essence on the piece of work I'm doing. These reflective processes can be developed in the future by adding video blogs or audio instead of just written text to make it feel more personalized and so the viewer and feel how I felt on that day.

Communicating and Presenting a Creative Practice

For this project, I mainly used my sketchbook, workflow, and my action plan to present my work, ideas, and processes. I used my sketchbook to present my design ideas in the form of initial and final designs. This was done effectively as my peers and my tours understood my ideas and concepts from these drawings. My workflow is a more clear and more structured version of my sketchbook and it showcases refined pieces of work it has developed drastically after having a tutorial with my tutors as I’ve added pages that I was lacking. I have considered How I’m going to present my final work and I have changed multiple times at first I wanted a video of the model in the garment to be projected next to the piece however i changed my mind because I was running out of time.

Evaluative statement

Confirm copying
