This is an example of all the surface designs which are on my garment I have a mixture of surface designs

The reasoning behind all the surface design

I chose to have lots of surface designs and detailing because traditional and ceremonial Chinese garments are heavily decorated ranging from intense beading to intricate embroidery so I wanted to show a direct link of how I've used my inspiration to inspire my work. I think my surface design was successful as it's not a direct copy of any of my inspiration however you can see its influence on my work. it's also successful because I've been able to able different textiles skills from beading to screen printing and by using a range of materials it has a created a really unique and interesting look.

here is a list of some of the processes i did :

Beading-this was done to add more texture to the flowers and give small areas an almost 3D effect .it was also done so that it could add some luster to the costume as it is based on a Goddess
Hand Embroidery -I did this because I wanted to try and use some of the processes that were used in making traditional Hanfus however modernize the design/pattern
Applique-This was done to add a textural element and not have everything look so flat. I chose to use the moon phases because in Chang'e story it said Ho ye (her husband) looked to the moon and brought offerings when the moon was fullest and at its the highest peak so I wanted to incorporate that into my piece
screen printing -I screen printed around the cuffs of the jacket to mirror the motifs that are commonly seen on ceremonial Chinese jackets however the print I used is significant to my theme of the lunar goddess Chang'e as that is jade rabbit the rabbit she took to the moon that is seen in the shadows when her worshipers look into the moon for her
